California’s February Unemployment Rate Holds at 5.4%

Yorba Linda, CA – The Yorba Linda Chamber of Commerce shares the latest labor market update from the Employment Development Department (EDD), revealing that California’s unemployment rate remained steady at 5.4% in February 2025, despite a decrease of 7,500 nonfarm payroll jobs statewide.

California continues to show long-term job market resilience, with 3,083,700 jobs gained since April 2020, averaging 53,167 new jobs per month. Key highlights from February’s labor statistics include:

Job Growth in Key Sectors – Private Education & Health Services added 18,400 jobs, marking its 37th consecutive month of growth. Government employment also saw gains, particularly in Local Government (+5,000).
Decline in Unemployment – February marked the fourth consecutive month-over decline (-8,200) in unemployed individuals across the state.
Sectoral Job Losses – Professional & Business Services reported the highest losses (-7,700), particularly in computer systems design, legal services, and consulting.
