2018 Hoop It Up Tournament Showcases Competitive Youth Basketball
Teams from around the state, and as far as Bennington, Nebraska, began arriving in Carroll on Friday, February 23, for the 12th Annual Hoop It Up Basketball Tournament. The 2018 event had 67 teams register and nearly all were in attendance, despite the threat of potential winter weather.“This is one of our biggest events of the year and to see so many youth basketball teams, their families and fans all come to Carroll for the weekend is great for our community and our local businesses,” commented Shannon Landauer, Executive Director of the Carroll Chamber of Commerce.
The Hoop It Up Tournament has built a reputation for being well-organized and one of the most prestigious tournaments in western Iowa. With that, the tournament committee has received numerous compliments regarding the hospitality of the Carroll community.
“It’s great to have these teams who’ve never been to Carroll before enjoy our town, utilize our amenities and then tell us how friendly people are and what a great community we have,” adds Landauer.
The 12th Annual Hoop it Up Tournament took place Saturday and Sunday, February 24 and 25, at gyms throughout Carroll. Boy's teams in grades 4 - 9, and girls teams in grades 6 - 7, fiercely competed for a championship title. With 130 games played throughout the two days, the following teams were named champions of their division:
4th Grade Boys - SBL 4th Grade
5th Grade Boys - Carroll Knights White
6th Grade Boys - Bedford
7th Grade Boys - Harlan Cyclones
8th Grade Boys - Carroll Tigers
9th Grade Boys - Valley Tigers-Black
6th Grade Girls - Remsen Hawks
7th Grade Girls - Carroll Knights
Championship shirts, sponsored by Verizon Wireless Select Communication and Anytime Fitness, or trophies were presented to the winners. Games were played on the hour and each game had two certified officials. Coaches and fans commented on how well run the tournament was.
The tournament committee members that organized and worked the event included: Kurt Baumhover – Tournament Director, Scott Tigges – Scheduler, Mark Nepple – Committee Chair, Justin Yetmar, Della Lappe, John Perrin, Kyle Christensen, Pat Venteicher, Brent Kjellberg and Travis Osterlund.
