CADC Supports DMACC Computer Languages Program

CADC Provides Support for DMACC Computer Languages Program
At their March board meeting, Carroll Area Development Corporation Board the Directors learned of the proposed Computer Languages program that is currently being developed by Des Moines Area Community College at the Carroll Campus. DMACC Provost at the Carroll location, Joel Lundstrom, shared details of the program, how the need came about, and how his team has worked with area high schools to work in strategic partnership to develop a program that will meet the needs of the area school districts. Joel stated “It is rare to find a program that is in high-demand, may recruit new businesses to rural communities, and that has the support of schools, community, and economic development groups.

As the program is designed for students to begin their Junior year working toward a Computer Languages program, initially there is still work to be done. The first steps, according to Lundstrom, are hiring an instructor and securing students for participation. Additionally, the board was informed of career opportunities following the completion of the Computer Languages program. In discussing the implementation of this new curriculum as early as the next school year, CADC was interested in learning what support is still needed in order to secure the program locally as well as the long term potential and economic benefit to the area.
Leadership of Carroll Area Development Corporation were in agreement that providing financial support for the program was important to the success of the program for the long term. This addition to DMACC offerings is going to bring new career opportunities to area students. These classes are preparing kids for careers well above area median wages, and is providing a talent pipeline for existing employers that are experiencing recruitment challenges. In total, CADC is contributing up to $7,500 for the program to get started to ensure that all students in the DMACC Carroll market have the same opportunity to participate. According to Director Landauer, “CADC with its financial support is potentially changing the lives of young people in Carroll with a new educational opportunity and providing new economic development possibilities to strengthen Carroll county for years to come.”

Providing strength to partnerships in the community is something of interest to the organization. CADC has shown support in the past for education projects, specifically supporting the Instructional Support Levey put to the voters in 2014. “CADC has consistently supported investments to strengthen our talent pool available to local industry and potential entrepreneurs. As workforce development and low unemployment rates continue to be a topic locally, that conversation is consistent with what is being heard across Iowa and the Midwest. The communities that are making progress and continuing to grow are those that seek strategic partnerships and work together looking at the longer term vision for the community,” stated Executive Director, Shannon Landauer.
Jim Auen, CADC President points to the efforts of Governor Reynolds with Future Ready Iowa when discussing workforce. “We see leadership in the state focus on training local talent and doing their best to emphasize local opportunities. It is critical to educate students on local employment opportunities while they are in the process of making decisions for the future. With opportunities such as DMACC’s Computer Languages program, our area youth are able to get a headstart on their education with great career potential without significant financial burden.” As the trades and technical skills are an ever increasing need in rural communities, there is further emphasis at the state level to bring the business and education sectors together for discussion of future opportunities. As Carroll Area Development Corporation works closely with businesses in the Carroll County area, there is continued effort to bring workforce and education partners and opportunities to the table to explore the best and most efficient ways to encourage growth in the Carroll County communities.

Hoop It Up cancelled

On behalf of the Carroll Chamber of Commerce, we are going to cancel the 13th Annual Hoop It Up basketball tournament scheduled for this weekend, Feb. 23 & 24. Due to the expected forecast of freezing rain, snowfall and high winds, we want everyone to stay safe, which was our biggest deciding factor.
We are disappointed as we were looking forward to welcoming so many teams and fans to our community for a weekend full of games and so much more. We were also looking forward to watching all of our local teams play in front of a home crowd.
We’re looking forward to Hoop It Up 2020.

Hoop It Up tournament brings community together

CARROLL – The Carroll Chamber of Commerce will host the 13th Annual Hoop It Up youth basketball tournament the last weekend in February, and the deadline to enter teams is less than a month away.
The tournament – which is for boys in grades 3 to 9 and girls in grades 5 to 8 – is in its 13th year and is set for Feb. 23 and 24. The games are played at eight gyms around town, at Carroll and Kuemper Catholic schools and the Carroll Recreation Center.
“Hoop It Up is a great event for this community as it showcases our progressive, revitalized city,” said Kurt Baumhover, who first organized the tournament 13 years ago and serves as tournament director. “We’re able to show off everything Carroll has to offer to approximately 3,000 people in a two-day span.”
Baumhover looks forward to the excitement Hoop It Up brings to the community every year.
“Everyone puts their best foot forward,” Baumhover said, noting the numerous volunteers and organizations who step up to help with the tournament, including the Carroll and Kuemper Booster Club volunteers who work admissions and local organizations who run concession stands. “It says a lot to be in our 13th year. Many teams chose the Carroll Hoop It Up to be their last tournament of the year because we not only have great school facilities, but also great hotels to accommodate them, great restaurants and great retail stores.”
The Carroll Chamber hosts the event to help draw visitors to Carroll in an effort to boost the city’s hotels, restaurants and businesses. Sixty-eight teams competed last year. Over 40 are registered so far for this year’s tournament.
Mark Nepple, who chairs the Chamber’s Hoop It Up committee says the event not only highlights the talented homegrown players, but the town as a well.
“Our young players and families travel all over for tournaments like this one, so it’s nice to be able to have one in our community that not only brings talent to our town, but also shows off what Carroll has to offer,” Nepple said. “Whether it be shopping, dining or just enjoying the close knit community that I get to call home, it’s a great way to bring people here.”

Carroll Chamber Says “Thank You” to Local Ag Industry with Golf Outing Appreciation Event

The Carroll Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Agri-Business Golf Outing on Friday, August 11, 2017, to recognize and honor the area’s 1,065 farms and the hardworking individuals and businesses behind the success of those farms.

“Agriculture is a cornerstone of our community and the Chamber Golf Outing is one opportunity to say thank you, not only to the farmers but also those in agri-business who support our local ag community,” explains Sarah Foley, Chamber program director.

According to the 2012 USDA Census of Agriculture, the market value of crops grown in Carroll County reaches $192.2 million. Meanwhile, the market value of Carroll County livestock tops $384.4 million. Of course a business this sizable doesn’t just happen.

Agriculturally related jobs in the county account for more than 3,683 jobs, with those individuals earning $235.2 million annually.

“We see agriculture every day, driving past a corn field or watching a feed truck roll through town,” adds Foley. “This is our event to recognize and celebrate these amazing efforts.”

The event is sponsored by more than 40 area businesses and an expected 140 golfers are registered to play, with many more expected to come and partake in the post-golf steak dinner. Additional steak dinner tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the Chamber office at (712) 792-4383.
