Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority
The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority is the leading provider of water and wastewater services in the greater Albuquerque metropolitan area. As the largest water and wastewater utility in New Mexico, we are committed to delivering exceptional services to our community.
As a political subdivision of the state, the Water Authority operates under the guidance of an eight-member Governing Board, ensuring accountability to our ratepayers. This esteemed board consists of three Albuquerque City Councilors, three Bernalillo County Commissioners, the Mayor of Albuquerque, and a non-voting member from the Village of Los Ranchos.
Our organization is powered by a dedicated team of approximately 635 employees who work tirelessly to meet the needs of our customers. With over 214,000 customer accounts, representing more than 650,000 water users, we are entrusted with providing reliable and sustainable water and wastewater solutions to the community we serve.
At the core of our operations is a dual groundwater/surface water supply system, which relies on the local aquifer and water imported from the Colorado River Basin through the San Juan-Chama Project. This comprehensive approach ensures a robust and efficient supply of water for our customers.
Our extensive infrastructure includes over 3,000 miles of water supply pipelines and more than 2,400 miles of sewer collector pipelines, enabling us to efficiently manage the distribution and treatment of water and wastewater throughout the region. With assets valued at over $5 billion, we are equipped to deliver world-class services to our community.
We take pride in our exceptional bond ratings, as we have been recognized for our financial stability and prudent management. Our bond ratings include AAA from S&P, Aa2 from Moody's, and AA from Fitch, reflecting our commitment to responsible fiscal practices.
The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority was established in January 2003 through the approval of Senate Bill 887 by the New Mexico Legislature. This bill transferred the municipal Water and Wastewater Utility to our authority, solidifying our role as the leading water and wastewater provider in the region. In December 2003, we entered into an operations and maintenance agreement with the City and County of Bernalillo, and by July 2007, we had fully assumed the administration of the water and wastewater utility.
