Charles Gala Sr, his future wife Margaret Chemsak Gala, and his sister Ann Pasinski started Gala Jewelers in 1948. The first store was located at 222 Fifth Avenue in McKeesport Pennsylvania. McKeesport was a busy commercial and industrial city located about thirty minutes from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The city boasted fourteen jewelers within four city blocks of the original store.
The business grew and move to 508 Walnut Street, then to 207 Fifth Avenue, and finally in 1970 to 224 Fifth Avenue where it remained for twenty four years. Each move allowed Galas to increase store size, selection of merchandise, and quality of services. Charles G. Gala joined his father in 1979. He received his gemology training at the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, California. In 1981 Galas was awarded membership in the prestigious American Gem Society.
In 1992 Galas became part of the Independent Jewelers Organization and began traveling to Antwerp, Belgium to purchase diamonds directly from the trading source of over fifty percent of the worlds diamonds. In 1994 the store moved four miles to its present location in the Oak Park Mall shopping center in White Oak, Pennsylvania. We have a full custom shop and an award-winning goldsmith to do, and control, all of our work. This has allowed us to provide uncompromising craftsmanship and service.
We also have an American Gem Society Accredited Gem Lab at the store to insure only the finest quality diamonds, colored stones, and beautiful jewelry. Our goal, as it has been since 1948, is to provide the best values in fine jewelry with unparalleled service.
