Lanier County Board Of Commissioners
Welcome to the Lanier County Board of Commissioners, located at 56 W. Main St, Suite 9, Lakeland, GA 31635. We take pride in serving the wonderful community of Lanier County, Georgia.
Lanier County boasts a rich natural heritage, with Banks Lake standing as a prominent jewel in our landscape. Situated in Lakeland, Banks Lake is not only a breathtaking body of water but also a designated National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Established in 1985, the refuge is dedicated to safeguarding and conserving this unique ecosystem, providing a sanctuary for migratory and resident wildlife. Its origins trace back to an ancient geologic process, resulting in the formation of a natural pocosin or sink.
The foundation of Lanier County dates back to 1920 when it was carved out from portions of Berrien, Clinch, and Lowndes counties. The county is named in honor of the esteemed poet Sidney Lanier. Our county seat, Lakeland, derives its name from the abundance of lakes in the vicinity, complemented by the presence of the Alapaha River. These natural features have long established Lanier County as a renowned destination for avid anglers seeking the thrill of exceptional fishing experiences.
We, at the Lanier County Board of Commissioners, are dedicated to preserving the legacy and fostering the growth of our beloved community. With a commitment to excellence and a vision for a prosperous future, we look forward to serving you.
