Sara J González Memorial Park

Sara J. González Memorial Park in Atlanta is a pioneering greenspace dedicated to honoring community, celebrating diversity, and advancing equality and belonging. As the first park in Georgia named for a Latino/a/x/e individual, it provides an all-abilities accessible, child and family-oriented environment for the growing Atlanta Westside community. The park's design incorporates six core features that embody values of diversity, community, dignity, and family. These include ADA-compliant wheelchair access, a playground for children of all abilities, and a children's soccer field. It also hosts Atlanta's first Learning Nook, an all-access, covered education area, and a Unity Plaza that facilitates twice-monthly food distributions for over 125 families in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs/Welcoming Atlanta.

A significant feature is the Officer Edgar Flores Memorial Learning Garden, the city’s only Latin ethnobotanical learning garden, which inspired the Sprouting Readers Program. This program, in collaboration with Emory University, Agape Youth and Family Center, and Bolton Academy, offers literacy and garden-oriented STEM education to 2nd/3rd graders. Recent additions to the park include a new all-abilities swing set, a water fountain, a bilingual lending library 'Biblioteca Carmen Rita' through the Little Free Library Read in Color program, and a large-scale permanent art installation/sidewalk mural by the Savannah College of Art and Design. The park commemorates the legacy of Ms. González, a devoted mother and Cuban immigrant who championed immigrant and minority rights, serving her community with joy and compassion.
