North Western Electric Cooperative, Inc. was established in 1936 to bring reliable electric service to rural northwest Ohio, when most rural areas lacked access to electricity. Formed by local farmers through the Rural Electrification Administration, the cooperative energized its first distribution lines in 1938, transforming daily life and supporting agricultural and community growth in Williams and Defiance counties.
Today, North Western Electric Cooperative serves more than 6,000 members through an extensive transmission and distribution system supported by multiple substations. As a member-owned cooperative and part of a nationwide network serving millions, NWEC remains committed to dependable service, operational excellence, and the long-term needs of the communities it serves, proudly celebrating over 85 years of service and progress.
