Established by the Lorain County Probate Court under Ohio's Park District Law of 1917, the district has grown to encompass over 9,000 acres, thanks to significant land donations. It offers 28 diverse reservations and more than 110 miles of trails for public enjoyment. The parks provide a wide array of activities, including hiking, bicycling, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, horseback riding, boating, fishing, hunting, and geocaching.
Additionally, the district hosts various programs such as summer camps, educational initiatives, scout badge programs, and senior bus tours. Facilities available for public use include shelters, meeting rooms, large event spaces, golf courses, a theatre, boat livery, dog park, equestrian arena, gardens, an observatory, playgrounds, and a raptor center, ensuring a comprehensive outdoor and recreational experience for all visitors.
